ABOUT STEREO COMPACT CASSETTE TAPES Pre-recorded Stereo Compact Cassette (Music)Tapes were first introduced in U.S. Sept. l966 by the Mercury (Philips) Record Company (49 Titles!) [Philips had invented the Compact Cassette Tape in 1963 originally for dictation!] They named them MUSIC-CASSETTES. Since vinyl record albums were the preferred form of recorded music - followed closely by Stereo 8-Track Tape Cartridges - Stereo Compact Cassette Tapes were only produced in very small quantites! Few people were interested in them, at the time, nor purchased them! This situation remained approximately the same throughout most of the l970's. Around l981, due in large part to the increasing popularity of the SONY "Walkman" and the continuing growth of Auto Cassette Players, Cassette sales rose rapidly and they were produced in much larger quantities. Please keep in mind that since early Stereo Compact Cassettes were produced on such a small scale - they are much rarer and so more difficult to obtain , especially in MINT Condition! (l966-l976) [Note: Stereo Compact Cassette Tapes have been phased out by all the major Music Companies and are no longer being produced!] ABOUT STEREO 8-TRACK CARTRIDGE TAPES Pre-recorded Stereo 8-Track Cartridge (Music)Tapes were first introduced in Sept. l965 by the RCA Victor Record Company (50 Titles!) for use in the new Stereo 8-Track Cartridge players installed as options in FORD MOTOR CO's l966 line of automobiles. Unlike their predecessors the Muntz Stereo 4-Track Tape Cartridge (invented by George Eash), the Stereo 8-Track Tape Cartridge (invented by Bill Lear, of Lear Jet fame) had the rubber pinch roller contained in the cartridge shell - instead of the player itself, had 4 different Stereo programs of music ( as compared to the 4-Track, which only had 2 - longer ones) and switched programs automatically! (The 4-Track's 2 programs of music had to be manually switched back and forth.) Stereo 8-Track Cartridge Tapes flourished in the late l960's and throughtout the l970's, but the vinyl LP was still the leader and preferred choice of music buyers. Because of the Stereo Compact Cassette's gaining popularity, portability, and acceptance by consumers as their choice for pre-recorded music, Stereo 8-Track Cartridge Tapes were completely discontinued by the Record Companies in late l982. (Some companies had already stopped issuing them for new releases - as early as l981!) [RCA & Columbia Record Clubs still continued to offer them on some titles - until mid l988!] As of today, Stereo 8-Track Cartridges in MINT or STILL SEALED condition are becoming VERY Hard-to-Find! (The scarcer Record Club Only titles, are even rarer!) ABOUT QUADRAPHONIC (Q8) FOUR CHANNEL CARTRIDGE TAPES Prerecorded Quadraphonic (Q8) Four Channel Stereo Cartridge Tapes were first introduced in Sept.1970 by the RCA Victor Record Company . (They were first called Quad-8, then shortened to just Q8.) Instead of having four two channel programs as on an 8-Track Cartridge, these new Quadraphonic Cartridges offered two four channel programs contained in the eight available tracks. Special Quadraphonic (Q8) Cartridge Tape Decks are needed to play these special Quadraphonic Tapes. (*If played on a regular stereo 8-Track deck - you will lose information contained in 2 of the channels and the music will sound strange , with voices and/or instruments missing!) Quadraphonic sound did not catch on with the public as a whole and by late l976, it was all but forgotten - although a few sporadic Quad (Q8) Tapes were issued in 1977 and 1978. (Note: most Quadraphonic (Q8) Tapes are "specially mixed" for Quadraphonic [four-channel] playback!) ABOUT VHS VIDEO TAPES VHS (Video Home System) Video Tapes and equipment were first introduced in U.S. in June 1977 by the JVC Company (Japan Victor Co.) and followed in Sept. 1977 (as "SelectaVision") by the RCA Victor Company. They were to compete with Sony's Betamax Home Video Recorder and Tapes - which had been first offered to consumers in Nov. l975. Pre-recorded Video Tapes of popular MOVIES did not appear until late l977 (Magnetic Video) and were at first very expensive and scarce. They were not usually sold - but offered to the public as a RENTAL item, to be borrowed, viewed and returned. The first Video rental store, George Atkinson's - "Video Station" - opened in Los Angeles in Dec. 1977. By l979, many "Video" stores had opened to rent these "new" Movie Tapes and they were also featured at the large FOTOMATTM chains of kiosks located in 1000's of shopping center parking lots of the time. Eventually the prices were lowered dramatically and these VHS Movie (& Music/Exercise) Video Tapes were sold to consumers to own, collect and watch - whenever they wanted.
