ORIGINAL STEREO 4-TRACK CARTRIDGE TAPES Stereo 4-Track Cartridge (Music)Tapes are the forerunners of the 8-Track Cartridge Tape. They were introduced in l962, in California, by entrepreneur - Earl Muntz. (They were invented in l954 by inventor George Eash.) The differences between them and 8-Tracks are that the 4-Track has the rubber pinch roller contained in the machine itself - and not in the tape shell, as the 8-track has. (There is a HOLE in the 4-Track cartridge's shell - where the machine's rubber pinch roller fits into it.) Also, the 4-Track has 2 - longer programs of Stereo music, where the 8-Track has 4 - shorter ones. (They need to be manually switched between programs - as they have NO automatic track switching mechanism, like the later 8-Track Tape does.) [4-Tracks can ONLY be played on a 4-Track Tape Deck that has the pinch roller contained in it and has special 4-Track tape heads.] They are extremely Hard to Come by in Mint or SS Condition!
